Myrto Vratsanou: From Female Character To Ghost

20 September

The performative presentation titled From Female Character To Ghost, functions as a seance to
reach through to the ghosts of female characters from popular series. We will be examining major female characters who are killed off, only to return as hallucinations in the male protagonist's mind, in series such as House MD, Sherlock and the Leftovers. We’ll be assuming the point of view of these female ghosts through the mediation of the computer screen and the digital manipulation of found-footage. As they are reduced from characters to plot devices, they are, in a sense, abject and can therefore be used as a disguise. A collective reading session, borrowing elements from Dead Girl shows and feminist perspectives on ghost stories, reflecting on issues such as the male, heteronormative gaze, personas and identification, haunting in digital media and literature, perceptions of spaces and memories, etc.

Myrto Vratsanou is an artist and art educator. She studied at the Athens School Of Fine Arts and the Academy Of Fine Arts Vienna. She has participated in collective projects, exhibitions and workshops internationally. Myrto's work deals with fiction and the haunted and sensual aspects of technology, digital and material spaces.
