Amos Vogel
& Cinema 16 tribute
16 September
A tribute to one of the pioneer curators of transgressive cinema. Amos Vogel, best know as founder of the group Cinema 16 and writer of the seminal book "Film as a Subversive Art" has showcased, promoted and taught underground cinema for over two decaded. He organised screenings of notorious, often banned films and believed that there should be hardly any limits as to what can constitute the topic of a film or the visual training of an audience. For this particular tribute, we have chosen a series of films, some of which have not been screened before in Athens. All of the films presented here concern to a certain extent notions of transgressive pleasure and the darker instincts of the human spirit.
Screening NOT for the faint of heart!
Film list includes formerly banned kidsploitation surreal horror Emperor Tomato Ketchup by Shuji Terayama, 32-min silent autopsy film The Act of Seeing with One's Own Eyes by Stan Brakhage, various films from the Vienna Aktionist group, Nazi propaganda film The Eternal Jew, underground queer classic Flaming Creatures by Jack Smith and others.
